“The Reaper from Romania” Ionut Popa Eyes K-1 Title: “I’m Only Interested in the Belt.”
9.20.2024
Sunday, September 29th, Ionut “The Reaper” Popa (Romania/Team Super Pro Alin Balasa Sibiu) will storm into the K-1 ring for the very first time at the K-1 WORLD MAX 2024 event at the Yoyogi National Stadium, 2nd Gymnasium in Tokyo. In the opening round of an electrifying 8-man, one-day tournament to crown the 7th K-1 WORLD GP Super Lightweight Champion, Popa will clash with Japan’s own Hayato Suzuki, the reigning 7th Krush Super Lightweight Champion (Japan/K-1 Gym Gotanda Team Kings).
Popa is no stranger to titles. As the current FIGHT CLUBBING Light Welterweight (-64.5kg) Champion, he added another accolade to his name in June 2024, defeating Odris Ramzi to capture the ISKA Intercontinental Light Welterweight (-65kg) belt and becoming a double champion. A dynamic fighter who seamlessly switches between orthodox and southpaw, Popa’s arsenal includes pinpoint left middle kicks and crushing low kicks that leave his opponents reeling.
Hayato Suzuki, Popa’s opponent, has been on an incredible streak. Last July, he floored Dansiam Weerasakreck with a left straight and followed up with a decision victory over Mohamed Islam in September. In December, he delivered a devastating KO against Toyoki. In March 2024, Suzuki went toe-to-toe with Koya Urabe, enduring an inhuman number of calf kicks before securing a hard-fought decision win. Now, he’s set on adding the K-1 Super Lightweight title to his collection of wins.

“It really does. It’s like a dream come true. I’ve wanted to fight in this top-tier league ever since I was a kid, and I’m going to put on a show.”
