[K-1 BEYOND] Darryl Verdonk Predicts a Thrilling Title Match Against Ouyang Feng: “I’ll Deliver the Best Fight!” – May 31

On May 31 (Saturday), at K-1 BEYOND held at Yokohama Buntai, Darryl Verdonk (Netherlands / Fight Team Ringer) will challenge Ouyang Feng (China / Tianjin Afu Fight Club / CFP) for the K-1 WORLD GP Super Welterweight Title.
Verdonk made a significant impact in March 2024 by knocking out Hiromi Wajima in the opening round of the K-1 WORLD MAX tournament. Although he suffered a decision loss to Dengue Silva in the July quarterfinals, he bounced back with an extra-round decision win over Zhora Akopyan in October. In February 2025, he proved his world-class skills by knocking out Jomthong Striker Gym.

Q: Your previous fight against Jomthong ended with a spectacular backspin blow KO. How do you reflect on that match?
“The fight was brief, but it reaffirmed one of my strengths: aggressiveness. Jomthong is a knowledgeable and technically skilled fighter; I sensed his intelligence early in the first round. Instead of trying to outsmart him, I decided to showcase my aggressive style, which led to the KO.”
Q: Indeed, your aggressive style seemed to lead to the KO. You’re very popular in Japan, and the venue was quite lively.
“The support from fans always gives me strength. Thank you! I strive daily to be my best, and it’s the greatest feeling to entertain and motivate fans through my efforts. Having that recognized is a huge joy and a driving force for what’s next. I especially love Japanese fans!”
Q: Currently, the 70kg division in K-1 is considered one of the highest levels globally. As someone competing at the top, do you feel the same?
“I really believe K-1’s 70kg division is of the highest caliber. Facing excellent opponents has allowed me to grow significantly. Even in this year’s K-1 matches, I feel I’ve made great strides.”
Q: This time, you’re challenging Ouyang Feng for his title. How did you feel when you received the offer, and what was the reaction from your teammates and friends?
“I got the call from my coach while I was driving. When he said, ‘You’re going to be in a K-1 title match,’ I was so excited I had to pull over for safety—I couldn’t contain my excitement (laughs). I sat in the parked car, savoring the joy. We’ve been working hard as a team for this opportunity, so it’s truly wonderful to see that effort pay off.”
Q: Glad there was no traffic accident. Please avoid phone calls while driving.
“No worries, my partner answered the call, and we spoke on speakerphone. I’ll be more careful in the future (laughs).”
Q: What is your assessment of Ouyang Feng?
“Ouyang is a strong, well-rounded fighter with a solid record. He knows how to structure a fight and is very skilled. But I’m also a fighter who can adapt to any situation. This match will be tough, but ultimately, the one with the stronger heart will win (smiles).”
Q: Can you tell us about Ouyang’s strengths and your own advantages?
“Ouyang’s strength lies in his versatility and ability to handle various situations. But I’m not an ‘ordinary fighter.’ I’m a ‘real fighter.’ I will fight with everything I have to win.”
Q: Ouyang remains undefeated. Do you see any weaknesses in him?
“It’s true he’s undefeated, but I have confidence in my ability to beat him. I believe in myself, and I want to prove that in the ring on May 31.”
Q: What kind of fight do you anticipate?
“This match will undoubtedly be a fierce battle. Both of us will come forward and give everything we have. I’m certain it will be an exciting fight that fans will enjoy!”
Q: If you become the K-1 champion, what kind of image do you want to present to the fans?
“One of my goals is to show everyone the importance of pursuing dreams and achieving goals. Becoming a K-1 champion is the best way to prove that ‘if you work hard, dreams can come true.’ I will make that a reality.”
Q: Please share your aspirations for the rumored upcoming MAX World Tournament.
“It’s important to focus on the task at hand. Right now, I’m solely focused on becoming the K-1 champion. To move forward, I need to concentrate on this title match first.”
Q: Understood. Lastly, please share your enthusiasm for this event.
“Through K-1, I’ve received incredible support. I’m truly grateful. Your cheers empower me to fight with all my strength. As a token of appreciation, I will give my all once again, become the champion, and I’ll deliver the best fight!”
